A Three-Dimensional Database for Visualization of Human Physiology
Engineering Animation, Inc.

A Three-Dimensional Database for Visualization of Human Physiology Engineering Animation, Inc., a small company in Ames, IA, with co-funding from NIST's Advanced Technology Program (ATP), has developed core software technology to create three-dimensional images from sequences of two- dimensional cross-sectional images of human body parts. The company has combined the new technology with very large, existing databases of the human anatomy to form the Virtual Human database. This database is being used to create products for undergraduate and medical education which include virtual reality surgical training prototypes, interactive CD-ROMs, and print products for human anatomy. Engineering Animation has also entered into an agreement to develop software that will support Endovascular Technology's Endovascular Grafting System, a less-invasive, less costly alternative to open vascular surgery. This software will enable doctors to "walk through" a patient's anatomy on the computer. According to Engineering Animation's President and CEO, winning an award from the ATP was the turning point for the company, helping it to grow from fewer than 20 to nearly 400 full-time and part-time employees, double its revenues every year since receiving the award, and attract investors through two public stock offerings.
