Funding Opportunities for
High Risk Research

Monday, November 13, 2000 -- Proposers' Conference 
Sessions held on Monday are specifically aimed to give you the in-depth information you need to know about the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Advanced Technology Program's (ATP) funding process and the criteria for selection. Attendees will learn all they will need to know about the newly streamlined process to apply for funding. Attendance for Monday is free. 
12:00 NOON  Registration 
1:00 PM - 4:30 PM  Proposers' Conference -- ATP has funded 522 projects valued at $3.3 billion ($1.40 billion ATP - $1.29 billion Industry) that includes over 1,200 companies. The session will provide interested individuals and companies with information on how to apply for ATP funding for their research.  
4:30 PM--5:30 PM   Research Policy on Human and Animal Subjects -- This is a vital session for funding applicants who may be using either human or animal subjects. ATP staff will talk about the government's policy in this area. Moderator: Tryn Stimart, Human and Animal Subjects Advisor, ATP
4:30 PM--5:30 PM   One-on -One Meetings with ATP Staff -- ATP Program Directors are experts in research fields such as information technology, photonics and electronics, nanotechnology, chemistry and life sciences, biotechnology, and materials and manufacturing. This is your chance to meet and generically discuss your proposed research idea with the experts prior to submission of your application. 
5:00 PM   Informal Reception with Cash Bar 
Tuesday, November 14, 2000 -- WORKSHOPS 
Sessions held on Tuesday expand upon sources of funding from the government, military and venture capitalists. In addition, two sessions will explore hot research topics and provide participants with a snapshot of the breakthroughs that scientists and technologists are exploring today. There is a $100 fee for attendance on Tuesday to cover meal costs and materials.

8:30 AM--9:00 AM  Opening Session -- This session will kick off the day's discussions of the funding stream, sources for funding, and hot topics in research. Government funding sources of nearly $1 billion will be detailed throughout the day.

9:00 AM--10:30 AM  Federal R&D Funding Opportunities Workshop  

For those interested in learning about other government agencies and their funding programs, this session will explain how to apply and give examples of companies who got their start using government funds.

    Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program

    Learn about DARPA's $50 million in funding for technological innovation by small and disadvantaged businesses. This agency funded the development of the Internet and launched the Internet revolution.

    This program awarded $352 million in fiscal year 2000 for innovative research conducted by small businesses.

    This session will cover $500 million in funding available from the Department of Defense for a broad range of military technology areas. This is the program that helped launched companies like Qualcomm.

If you are a policy institution, federal agency, or represent state and local government, this session will talk about strategic investments and available state matching funds to support research.
