MEDIA ADVISORY: 1995 ATP GENERAL COMPETITION DRAWS 252 APPLICANTS |
The Commerce Department's Advanced Technology Program received 252 project proposals in the 1995 general competition which closed March 1, according to ATP officials at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The greatest number of proposals (50) were in the general category of biotechnology, according to the ATP, followed by electronics (47) and computer science (37). Other significant R&D categories in the 1995 competition included energy and the environment (32 proposals), manufacturing (21), materials science (20), and chemicals (18).
ATP Acting Director Brian Belanger said the number of proposals was "just about what we expected from past experience." The ATP has allocated about $25 million to $30 million in first-year funding for the 1995 general competition and generally funds about 10 percent of the proposals it receives in general competitions at an average of about $1 million to $2 million in first-year funding.
