Summary
On November 18th 1998,
the ATP Organic Electronics Technologies Workshop marked the beginning of
a new ATP interest area and concentrated discussion topic with U.S. industry.
The workshop had the purpose of engaging the electronics/photonics and supporting
infrastructure industries in discussions which will assist them in competing
in the ATP's FY 1999 and later competitions.
The workshop gave participants the opportunity
to explore the current state of organic electronics technologies, considering
both the expanding business potentials across a diverse set of electrical
or optical product functions, and the technological factors which inhibit
the widespread insertion of these technologies within future commercial
products. In particular, the workshop:
- provided industry with a crosscutting
view of business opportunities and technical barriers for organic electronic
technologies,
- guided ATP in determining its future role
in high technical risk R&D in this topic, and
- helped industry identify appropriate issues
for industry-government partnerships within the ATP.
ATP targeted participation
by industrial researchers, managers and business specialists, and university
experts across a spectrum of disciplines including the materials, equipment,
device and various user sectors for it's 1998 workshop. In total some sixty
persons participated, fourty-two from U.S. companies, fourteen from academia,
two from U.S. industry-based consortia, and three from agencies of the U.S.
Government.
Below you will find materials presented
and resulting from the workshop. We hope you find this of value as you
consider ATP and your future opportunities.
