Biometrics and Security Technology

Biometrics and Security: Biometrics is the science of recognition of a person based on a physiological characteristic. The methods of recognition include fingerprints, speech, face, retina, iris, handwritten signature, hand geometry, and wrist veins. Biometrics is used in security applications such as gaining system access and entry after identification. In identification mode, the biometrics system identifies a person from the enrolled population by searching a database for a match. A biometrics system may also be used in verification mode. In verification mode, the system uses biometrics to authenticate a person's claimed identity based on his/her previously enrolled pattern. For biometrics to become a mainstream, technological breakthrough solutions are essential that will leapfrog the current state of the art. These breakthrough solutions will lead to biometrics systems that are lower in cost, faster, more accurate, and easier to use.
