Gary L. Kreps,
Ph.D. (1979, University of Southern California) is Chief of the
Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch of the National
Cancer Institute's Behavioral Research Program, Division of Cancer
Control and Population Sciences. He plans, develops, and coordinates
major new research initiatives concerning risk communication,
health promotion, behavior change, and information dissemination
relevant to cancer prevention and control. Before joining the
National Cancer Institute, he served as Founding Dean and Professor
in the School of Communication at Hofstra University. Prior to
that, he was Executive Director and Professor in the Greenspun
School of Communication at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
He also served in faculty and administrative positions at Northern
Illinois, Rutgers, Indiana, and Purdue Universities.
His areas
of expertise include health communication, information technology,
organizational communication, multicultural relations, and applied
research methods. He is the author/editor of more than 20 books
and 150 articles examining the important roles performed by communication
in society and has received numerous academic honors and awards.
For example, he received both the Future of Health Technology
Award and the Ferguson Report's Distinguished Achievement Award
for Outstanding Contributions in Consumer Health Informatics and
Online Health in 2002, the Outstanding Health Communication Scholar
Award in 2000, and the Gerald M. Phillips Distinguished Applied
Communication Scholarship Award in 1998.
