Tom Eng, VMD,
MPH, is President of the eHealth
Institute, a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve access
to and quality of eHealth resources. Dr. Eng's areas of expertise
include the application of emerging communication and information
technology, especially the Internet, to health communication, health
care, and public health. He is also President of EvaluMetrix
LLC, a health technology strategic consulting and tools development
company, which is developing several innovative technology tools
to help consumers locate relevant online resources and to help clinicians
enhance patient communication. Dr. Eng is the chair and founder
of the renowned eHealth Developers' Summit, an annual forum for
leading eHealth executives and funders. He is a mentor for the National
Social Venture Competition, is on the National Advisory Committee
of the Health e-Technologies Initiative, and serves on other advisory
groups. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed
articles, books and book chapters, and abstracts on a wide range
of health and technology issues, including the landmark books, The
eHealth Landscape: A Terrain Map of Emerging Information and Communication
Technologies in Health and Health Care, and Wired for Health and
Well-Being: the Emergence of Interactive Health Communication. Dr.
Eng is an associate editor of the Journal of Health Communication
and on the editorial board of Internet Healthcare Strategies. He
has worked previously at the US Department of Health and Human Services,
the Institute of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
the Peace Corps, the US Senate, and two state health departments.
In addition, he has provided health-related consultations in more
than a dozen countries on six continents. He is an alumnus of the
University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.
