Adam Darkins
is the Chief Consultant for Telemedicine at the Veterans Health
Administration (VHA) at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The
VHA is among the world leaders in telemedicine and telehealth development.
VHA is an integrated health care system with an electronic patient
record that is nationally available which provides unique opportunities
for telehealth development. He is the Chief Consultant designate
for a new Office of Care Coordination that is being established
within VHA. The mission of this office is to assist in the clinical
and organizational change management necessary to ensure that patients
receive the right care in the right place at the right time. The
vision of the office is that the place of residence is the preferred
place of care for patients and that all eligible health needs should
be met across the continuum of care in a timely and appropriate
manner. Using new information technology in ways that meets the
needs and expectations of patients and providers is a critical component
to achieving the mission and vision of VHA's Office of Care Coordination.
