NISTIR 7323 - The Determinants of Success in R&D Alliances
AcknowledgementsThe background for this study was the earlier work by Jeffrey Dyer and Benjamin Powell under a contract with ATP's Economic Assessment Office (EAO). They interviewed company participants from ATP joint venture projects in the automotive industry to assess the factors that contribute to success in R&D collaborations. Their findings are published in the report Determinants of Success in ATP-Funded R&D Joint Ventures: A Preliminary Analysis Based on 18 Automobile Manufacturing Projects, GCR-00-803, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD, December 2001. ATP's Economic Assessment Office contracted with Westat, a survey research organization, to develop and implement survey instruments to collect original data from companies that have participated in ATP-supported projects. Andrew Wang, economist at ATP/EAO, initiated and directed the effort to carry out a special survey of company participants in ATP joint venture projects. Jennifer O'Brien, survey methodologist at Westat, oversaw design, development, and data collection for the Survey of ATP Joint Ventures. Stephen Campbell, economist at ATP/EAO, provided invaluable support to this research in constructing data, conducting analysis, and commenting on interpretation of results. Andrew and Stephen presented analysis and findings related to this research at the American Statistical Association meeting in August 2004. Andrew presented an early version of this study at the International Society for New Institutional Economics meeting in October 2004. Jeffrey Dyer presented a version of this study at the Academy of Management meeting in August 2005. For the present study, Stephanie Shipp, Director, EAO, provided comments and feedback on several drafts of the report. Brian Belanger, former ATP Deputy Director, and Lorel Wisniewski, present ATP Deputy Director, reviewed the final draft and provided comments. Dennis Leber, Statistician, NIST, also provided comments on the final draft. Robert Sienkiewicz, Supervisor, EAO, and Janet Brumby, Business Liaison Specialist, EAO, oversaw the publication of the report. Joann Brooks designed the cover.
