(Oral Presentations Only)

The Use of Fiber-Reinforced Composites for Automotive Applications:
Past, Present, and Future

2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 14, 2002
Long Beach, CA

Moderator: Dr. H. Felix Wu, Program Manager, Chemistry and Life Sciences Office, Advanced Technology Program (ATP), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Many significant applications of fiber-reinforced composites have been developed in the automobile industry by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), manufacturers, and material suppliers.  Considerable effort has been made from government-funded projects, and continues to be made, to advance the use of composites in the automobile industry.

A special panel has been developed to address current and future opportunities that will be of interest to a broad segment of the composites community.  The panel will include of representatives from two government-funding agencies, the "Big Three" automobile companies, and the technology leaders of four composites companies.  The government representatives, from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Technology Program (ATP) and the Department of Energy (DOE) Partnership for New Generation Vehicles (PNGV), will discuss advances in current programs and future funding opportunities for government-industry-university research and development partnerships.  Typical government efforts include the ATP’s "Manufacturing Composite Structures" and Fuel Cell Technology programs, and the DOE’s Low-Cost Carbon Fiber and Lightweight Composite Vehicles Programs.  Additional discussion areas of significant interest to the composites area will include:

  • DaimlerChrysler, GM, and Ford will provide insight into their efforts through such entities as the Automotive Composites Consortium (ACC).
  • Integrated low-cost manufacturing technology from the National Composite Center;
  • Flexible plastic molding processes from Stewart Automotive Research;
  • Carbon vs. fiberglass performance and cost issues; material trends on materials supplier’s viewpoints from Hexcel and PPG;
  • Future directions and applications of fiber-reinforced composites for the automobile industry.

Panel Participants:

  • Dr. H. Felix Wu (Moderator and Participant), Program Manager, NIST/ATP, Gaithersburg, MD
  • Mr. David Warren, Program Manager, DOE/ORNL, Oak Ridge, TN
  • Dr. Nancy Johnson, Manager, General Motors Corporation, Warren, MI
  • Mr. Gilbert Chapman, Senior Manager, DaimlerChrysler, Rochester Hills, MI
