Invitation Letter: ATP/DOE December 12, 1996 Meeting

Department of Energy
Washington, DC 20585

November 5, 1996

Dear Participant:

On bhalf of the Department of Energy (DOE), with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), we invite you to attend a half-day workshop on the availability of cost-shared awards sponsored by the Advanced Technology Program (ATP). This public meeting, to be held in Crystal City, Virginia, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on December 13, will provide information to scientists, engineers, and business managers within the battery technology industry. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, Advanced Technology Program, can help you develop the technologies you need to bring new, innovative products to market. The ATP provides cost-shared funding to support critical research for key commercial technologies.

The Advanced Technology Program has backed a broad range of innovative research projects with promising economic potential. The focus of the meeting will be on the scope of the ATP and its benefits to project participants in accelerating high risk development and commercialization of battery technologies. Funding is available for projects likely to stimulate economic growth, but unlikely to be undertaken without cost sharing. There are both general competitions as well as focused programs open to emerging innovative technologies.

The meeting topics will acquaint you with the overall ATP program. The goal of the presentation is to provide potential participants with the capability of making business decisions about submitting proposals to future ATP solicitations. We have taken care to design a program with the flexibility to ensure that each attendee has the opportunity to ask questions, offer insights, or simply raise relevant issues.

DOE is participating in sponsorship of this meeting as part of its mission to establish a strong research and competitive base that will meet future transportation needs, reduce our dependence on petroleum, and promote a cleaner environment. The goal of the NIST program is national economic growth. Together, these Federal agencies hope to encourage interest in this cutting-edge collaboration with private industry.

Enclosed is a registration form and information on hotel accommodations. The workshop site, the Crystal Gateway Marriott, is located within minutes of Washington National Airport (free shuttle service from airport terminals) and is easily accessible from the Washington Metropolitan area (walking distance from Metro rail transit). For out-of-town attendees, we have negotiated a reduced room rate. This is particularly convenient for those wishing to extend their stay. Please note that participants requiring hotel accommodations must make their own reservations directly with the hotel and the cut-off date for obtaining a reduced rate is November 27. Also, to ensure preparation of a meeting packet for you, please forward the registration form by November 27. The form can be faxed directly to Marianne Kost, of Abacus Technology Corporation, at (301) 907-8508. Please direct any other questions concerning meeting logistics to Ms. Kost at (301) 907-8500.

We expect a vigorous response to this announcement and we highly recommend that you register early! We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us at the Advanced Technology Program meeting for this unique technology development opportunity.

Sincerely,

/signed/

Kenneth L. Heitner, Ph.D.
