Robert A. Lieberman, Ph.D., Robert A. Lieberman, Ph.D., is Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Intelligent Optical Systems, Inc. Dr. Lieberman received both his B.S. and M.S. in Physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. From the University of Michigan, he received a Ph.D. in Physics with an emphasis on solid-state physics and biophysics. After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Lieberman joined AT&T Bell Laboratories where he was a Member of the Technical Staff for ten years. He was involved in the development and testing of devices for two commercial product lines: magnetic bubble memories, and high-power GaAs field effect transistors. In 1984 he joined the Molecular Biophysics Department and, funded by the Medical Venture organization within Bell Labs, initiated a project developing fiber-optic biosensors. In this product-oriented project, designed to position AT&T in the medical equipment market, Dr. Lieberman invented and developed several innovative sensors. He was responsible for the training of product development personnel, and oversaw the early phases of the technology transfer/product design process. From 1986 through 1991, Dr. Lieberman worked in the Optical Fiber Research Department, where he was the principal investigator for research on fiber-optic sensors. He successfully developed several novel fiber-optic chemical sensors, pressure sensors, magnetic field sensors, and temperature sensors. Dr. Lieberman joined Physical Optics Corporation (POC) in 1991 as the Director of POC's Advanced Fiber Optics Laboratory, was promoted to Vice President in 1994, and to General Manager of Research and Development in 1996. He now serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Intelligent Optical Systems, Inc., an independent company formed of the R&D Division of POC. He has been the principal investigator on projects aimed at developing novel fiber optic and integrated optic biosensors, gas sensors, liquid-phase sensors, magnetic field sensors, medical sensors, sensor networks, and "smart structures" for the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, DARPA, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), NASA, and the U.S. Department of Energy, Dr. Lieberman also oversees research on target recognition, spectral analysis, signal processing, biomedical optics, novel laser structures, integrated optic sensors, biochip readout technology, and nondestructive evaluation. Over 50 publications bear his name; he holds four U.S. patents. He founded and chairs the annual SPIE Conference on Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Sensors, serves on numerous international conference committees on chemical and physical fiber-optic sensors, and is Vice Chairman of ASTM standards Subcommittee E13.09 on Fiber Optics in Molecular Spectroscopy. Dr. Lieberman is a Fellow of SPIE, a Senior Member of IEEE, and is on the editorial boards of Optical Engineering and the British Physical Society's Journal of Measurement Science and Technology. |
